Installation Remains

    There's still a lot that I don't know for sure, but I have a general idea of what I want to do for my installation. I plan on having it in the back left corner of the Mudd Gallery, but any small room would probably work. I originally wanted to make plaster casts of arms, legs, faces, etc to arrange around the room, but I don't know how to do anything with plaster and I think that would take too long, so I'm planning on using paper mache. This will be a much quicker and cheaper option will give me an idea of what the installation will look like if I ever get to do it with plaster. I am going to arrange these body parts on the floor as well as on a table/chair. I also want to take some black and white pictures of myself and edit them to look ghostly and have pieces missing, these will be hung on the walls on either side of the corner.

Self Portrait — FAKE ART COLONY

I just recently saw this in the Milwaukee Art Museum and I think its super funny and weird. It is the artists face projected onto this little yellow doll, and he states something about himself (like how he has trouble meeting people) every few seconds. It's really uncomfortable to look at even though I find it hilarious. I just like its composition, that is sort of an inspiration. 


    The final part that I have an idea for right not is that I want to project a video (maybe vertically) into the corner. It will be a very blurry image so it is hard to make out what's going on, and right now I am thinking it will be a really long video moving through the streets of Appleton. It is also going to be black and white, and maybe tinted red too. I don't really have a super definite theme in mind because these are just things that I am finding interesting, but I think it mainly is dealing with how I am currently feeling and how I view myself. The main thing I need to think about now is if I need to change/add anything, because right now it feels like more of a tableaux rather that something you can interact with. I really like using fabric and thread so I might try to use that in some way around the room, because I think the piece might be better if the viewer is forced to interact with it.

This is where the impetus to do plaster casting came from, I really like how Whiteread casts regular objects and turns them into something to imposing/breathtakaing.

  1. Plaster casts are pretty cool! The change for using paper mache is also nice! I really like the second picture that you saw in Milwaukee Art Museum. I think that is a pretty good installation and inspiration for your installation! I'm so excited to see how you can set these things up!

  2. I've actually seen a Rachel Whiteread piece and studied it a little for a class I took in Vienna at the Judenplatz! Definitely a very unique and striking style. I'm looking forward to some uncanny cast/mache art.

My Flickr Findings

  My Flickr Blume No. 2 "Something is happening here and you don't know what it is, do you, Mister Jones?" Representative Activism

Justice MMIWG, Valaria Tatera, 2019-2021     I found Valaria Tatera's talk incredibly moving and informative. I had absolutely no idea Enbridge pipeline 5 existed or that Wisconsin even had residential schools. I think growing up in Wisconsin gave me the impression that most of the injustices meted out against native peoples were in other places, it was worrying to find out the same happened here. Although sadly it's not that surprising.      My complete ignorance on the topic shows just how deficient the school system is in the US, where the majority population can just choose to leave out the more unpleasant parts of history that make them look bad. Picnic Projections

      I really loved making our installation piece. The freedom we had to do whatever was so liberating. I was so impressed with how we had a bunch of different themes emerge from all the random stuff we brought, and how the piece felt pretty cohesive overall. The piece to me has a feeling of a picnic gone wrong. The front half especially is full of such vibrant colors and flowers, feeling inviting at first glance. Then as you look at it longer and read the writing on the walls, it feels a little more ominous. The back on the other hand takes this aggression further, with the book on the wall yelling at you along with all the 'Not for Sale" signs. It felt very current to make something that also seemed to be commenting on the environment. All the greens in the room and the flowers coming out of the trash definitely added to that, along with the fact that the possible consumerism of our 'store' was aborted by the 'Not For Sale' signs.
